Disability Services Guide to Melbourne

The National Disability Insurance Scheme, or NDIS, is the elephant my website. This bad boy is your golden Ticket for Support City. You may feel that you have been handed a blank map with no “You are here”. Do not worry! Persistence will see you through. Continue to ask for help. You’ll eventually find someone.

Melbourne has a plethora of non-government organisations that are always willing to lend an assisting hand. These groups are your friends, always there when you need them. They can provide anything from job support, to a place where people can connect and talk with others that understand their struggles. How about finding a tribe? Priceless.

Also, this area is buzzing with innovation. Melbourne has more gadget and tech gurus than one can shake a broom. All of these people are working to make things easier for those with disabilities. You can download apps that help you to locate accessible areas on your nightout. Or gadgets for easier communication. This is like a Jetsons scene, minus Rosie.

This is the problem: accessing and finding cool programs and other tools isn’t quite as simple as one would hope. Imagine playing hide-and go-seek with a person that is very good at hiding. It’s hard to find the resources you need when it is difficult.

Community groups can be a secret weapon. Imagine your neighborhood watches, except they are not focused on crime prevention but rather friendship and support. This is where the real talking happens. Stories, tips, and even some gossip are shared over cups of tea (or stronger drinks, we won’t tell).

Life is not all unicorns and rainbows. It is possible that old-school views on disability can cause a problem. Even if you think of places that consider a small step to the door “accessible”, do not think about them. The road to true inclusion is not without obstacles.

The future looks bright as these clever people find novel solutions to old issues. Who knows! Flying wheelchairs? Teleportation devices? A robot buddy? Hey, everyone has the right dream!

That’s it. It’s like a scavenger-game or epic adventure. (With fewer draconians). It takes courage for one to laugh themselves.

Waiting for the moment to share. The road will have bumps, but what’s the point of life if it’s not an adventure?

Melbourne is a great place for people who have disabilities.
